Argument

The Apostolic Gospel Is Final

The apostolic gospel is a once-for-all entrusted message, so any later message that contradicts it must be rejected no matter how impressive its claimed source is.

Christian testing of later claims is not hostility to revelation. It is obedience to the apostolic warnings about contrary gospels and the faith entrusted to the saints.

Premises

  1. 1 Paul rejects any gospel contrary to the one already preached, even if an angel is claimed as its messenger.
  2. 2 Jude speaks of the faith entrusted once for all to the saints.
  3. 3 Hebrews presents God's decisive last-days speech in the Son.

A test for claimed revelation

The question is not whether a later movement tells an impressive origin story. The biblical question is whether its message agrees with the apostolic gospel.

Grace is not negotiable

A message that makes final salvation rest on another basis than God's grace in Christ changes the gospel rather than merely adding religious detail.
